FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Phoenix, Arizona – February 2, 2026 – The Arizona National Livestock Show has announced the addition of a Youth Welding Competition to its lineup of educational contests and events at the 2025 show. The competition will be in December during the week-long show, which runs from December 27–31 at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix. The new competition highlights technical skill, precision, and safety in welding, skills vital to modern agriculture and equipment maintenance.
The contest offers participants a hands-on opportunity to demonstrate their craftsmanship and attention to detail while developing skills that directly translate into workforce readiness. Welding remains one of the most in-demand trades in agriculture, manufacturing, and construction, and this contest provides an early opportunity for young people to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom or shop in a real-world setting.
Contestants will use MIG welding machines to assemble pre-cut metal animal silhouettes using fillet welds. Judging will be based on bead consistency, penetration, weld appearance, and structural alignment. By focusing on accuracy, technique, and safety, the competition mirrors the expectations of professional trade environments and encourages students to take pride in precision work.
“The welding contest is a natural addition to our youth contests,” said Tyler Grandil, Executive Director. “It reinforces practical skills that are essential in agriculture while preparing young people for future careers in the skilled trades. These young people represent the next generation of problem-solvers who keep farms, ranches, and rural industries running.”
